Summer Evenings

Flaming June

On a warm evening many of us met, some wearing "red " items of clothing. We had a variety of red subjects, including a description of the Red Pimpernel, a wild flower;the origins of red nail varnish and why women have adorned their nails for centuries (red toenails provided the visual aids). We heard about Red Adair, the American engineer and firefighter:the "red" in one members life -very entertaining; why "red" is part of the name of a member's house; another members "red" school blazer.  Two "red" poems by John Betjeman were read; we heard a description of the Moroccan flag and general  definitions of what red means, and finished with  "red" pictures taken from the internet by a member who accidently  pressed the wrong button and succeeded in using all her coloured ink!

Summer Walk

After a drizzly day, the weather remained kind for our evening walk. It was a super walk,  although the  undergrowth in places had taken advantage of the warm and wet weather!  The highlight of the evening was walking next to the Upton Warren Bird Reserve. Thanks are due to the two members who organised the evening.

Garden Visit

The visit to the garden, Hiraeth, was a success. The weather was pleasantly warm and we were able to sit outside and listen to an amusing sketch by the owner, Sue, of how the garden had grown over the last twelve years. She told us about the difficulties encountered and overcome, the commitment to keep it looking lovely, and the pleasures which ensued. It certainly was a pleasure to see all the flowers, trees and shrubs looking healthy and well cared for. It felt like a happy garden, with amusing ancdotes dotted around and bronze sculptures tastfully placed to add variety and interest.

Home made cake, tea and coffee were served, a welcome refreshment, and there was still time to chat and relax.
