An English Woman Abroad

One of our members has recently bought a house in Fez, Morocco, and we enjoyed an entertaining and  fascinating evening when she told us of her experiences.

We heard about the difficulties involved in finding a house ( she wanted one in the old part of the city, not the more modern suburbs), coping with the language and cultural differences and actually completing the purchase. After several visits they found a suitable house and having agreed the price, cash was the only acceptable way of transfering the money. So they had a walk from the bank through the narrow streets of the town with a large amount of cash in various bags!

On the day they arrived from England to move in they found that not only had the water and electricity been disconnected but the meters had been removed! Eventually they managed to get reconnected and lighting and plumbing  restored.

Over the last couple of years they have become accustomed to local traditions and making themselves understood in Arabic. They have enjoyed the way of life , shopping locally and making friends with the community, and visited the surrounding countryside with the help of the local taxi.

We all agreed that they had been extremely brave and tolerant  but had maintained a sense of sheer fun  throughout the whole experience.
